Do you enjoy binge-watching reruns of “House Hunters” or “Fixer Upper”? Are you constantly dreaming of your ideal home and all of its features?
Well, you’re not alone. In a survey conducted by Porch, both Americans and Europeans have strong opinions about their ideal home – and the answers may surprise you. We’ve summarized their top findings below and you can click on each image to take you to the full article.
While suburban and rural areas were more popular than urban areas, nearly 45 percent of Americans and 52 percent of Europeans agreed on one location: waterfront views. Additionally, more than half of Americans and Europeans chose newly constructed homes.
According to Americans and Europeans, the ranch house design is the most popular exterior style. Americans also ranked farmhouse and craftsman styles high on their list, while Europeans selected cottage- and Mediterranean-style homes.
Over 29 percent of Americans preferred composition shingles, followed by tile, slate, and concrete. Approximately 1 in 4 of Europeans wanted a wood roof.
Though Americans and Europeans agreed that an ideal home with granite and marble countertops were better options than ceramic or wood, they had different flooring opinions. Roughly 30 percent of Americans wanted tile in their kitchens, but nearly 16 percent opted for wood instead. 1 in 5 Europeans picked either marble or stone flooring.
Home Flooring and Features
When it came to flooring, both Americans and Europeans favored wood flooring over any other option, but Americans were also inclined to choose carpet, tile, and bamboo.
As for features, Americans were more interested in centralized air conditioning and a laundry room, while Europeans favored solar panels, swimming pools, and libraries.
Bedroom Flooring and Features
Although wood flooring is common throughout the rest of the house, 2 in 5 Americans actually prefer carpeting in their bedroom. Europeans were also fond of wood flooring, but bamboo, laminate, and marble were popular preferences.
Americans were also more likely to install a walk-in closet in their bedroom, an ensuite master bath, a first-floor master suite, and a fireplace. The only feature Europeans favored more was a balcony.
